While still in its nascent stages, the country is making deliberate strides in research, development, and strategic planning to position itself in the global quantum race. This post will explore the early steps India is taking toward a quantum tech revolution.

Government Initiatives and Funding Recognizing the potential of quantum technology, the Indian government has launched several initiatives to foster its growth. A key initiative is the National Mission on Quantum Technologies & Applications (NM-QTA), with a budget of INR 8000 crore (approximately $1 billion USD) over eight years. This mission aims to:

  • Fund basic and applied research in quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing, and quantum materials.
  • Develop quantum computers with increasing qubit counts and fidelity.
  • Establish centers of excellence for quantum research and education.
  • Promote collaborations between academia, industry, and government.

Research and Development Landscape Several academic institutions and research organizations in India are actively involved in quantum computing research. These include:

  • Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore: Focusing on quantum algorithm development and quantum device fabrication.
  • Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai: Conducting research in quantum information theory and quantum cryptography.
  • Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC): Developing quantum simulators and exploring applications in various domains.
  • Raman Research Institute (RRI), Bangalore: Working on quantum optics and quantum communication.

These institutions are contributing to the development of quantum algorithms, quantum error correction techniques, and the fabrication of quantum devices. While the qubit counts of domestically developed quantum computers are still relatively low, the focus is on building expertise and infrastructure for future advancements.

Industry Participation and Startups While the quantum computing industry in India is still emerging, several startups and established companies are beginning to explore the field. These include:

  • Quantum Ecosystems Technology Council of India (QETCI): An organization that promotes collaboration between industry, academia and government in the field of quantum technology.
  • Several tech startups: Focusing on quantum software development, quantum algorithm design, and quantum cybersecurity solutions.

These companies are working on developing quantum software platforms, exploring applications of quantum computing in areas such as drug discovery, materials science, and financial modeling, and providing quantum computing services to clients.

Challenges and Opportunities India faces several challenges in its pursuit of quantum computing:

  • Limited availability of skilled quantum scientists and engineers.
  • Lack of advanced infrastructure for quantum device fabrication.
  • Need for greater awareness and adoption of quantum technologies in industry.

However, India also has several advantages:

  • A large pool of talented STEM graduates.
